SEMH Teacher – Northumberland
We are seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teacher to join a supportive and inclusive educational setting in Northumberland. This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate practitioner who is committed to supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and helping them achieve positive outcomes both academically and personally.
As an SEMH Teacher, you will play a vital role in creating a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment where pupils can build confidence, develop positive relationships, and re-engage with education. The successful SEMH Teacher will be an experienced SEMH specialist with a proven ability to support pupils with complex social, emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs while delivering high-quality teaching tailored to individual learning requirements.
This role is initially offered on a temporary basis; however, there is potential for the position to become permanent after January for the right candidate, making it an excellent opportunity for an experienced SEMH Teacher seeking long-term career progression within a supportive setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons that meet the needs of pupils with SEMH needs.
- Create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment where pupils can thrive.
- Develop positive relationships with pupils to encourage engagement, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.
- Implement effective behaviour management strategies and support pupils with emotional regulation.
- Adapt teaching approaches and resources to meet individual learning needs and abilities.
- Assess, monitor, and track pupil progress, using assessment to inform planning and intervention.
- Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, pastoral staff, SENCOs, parents, and external agencies.
- Support pupils in developing social skills, resilience, independence, and positive coping strategies.
- Contribute to individual support plans, reviews, and reports where required.
Ensure safeguarding procedures and school policies are followed at all times.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – essential.
- Significant experience as an SEMH specialist, supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs – essential.
- Experience working with pupils who present challenging behaviour and barriers to learning.
- Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to build positive relationships with challenging learners.
- Excellent communication, organisation, and classroom management skills.
- A patient, resilient, and adaptable approach to teaching and learning.
- A strong understanding of trauma-informed practice, restorative approaches, and strategies to support emotional regulation.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
This role would suit an experienced SEMH Teacher who combines strong classroom practice with specialist SEMH knowledge and a passion for helping vulnerable young people succeed. The school is specifically seeking a QTS-qualified SEMH specialist who can confidently support pupils with complex needs and contribute to a positive and nurturing learning environment, with the opportunity to secure a permanent position after January.
