Caretaker – Darlington

Rate of Pay: From £12.71 per hour
 

We are seeking a reliable and proactive Caretaker to join a supportive secondary school in Darlington. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and practical individual to contribute to the safe and effective operation of a busy school site.

The successful Caretaker will work as part of the wider facilities team, helping maintain the premises to a high standard and ensuring the school remains safe, secure, and operational for students, staff, and visitors.

This is a varied, hands-on position covering maintenance, site security, health and safety, housekeeping, porterage, and general premises support.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out planned and reactive maintenance and first-line repairs.
Complete routine premises inspections and health and safety checks.
Support fire safety procedures and required daily checks.
Support opening and securing the school in accordance with site requirements.
Monitor security systems, locks, alarms, and CCTV.
Support and supervise contractors on site where required.
Monitor plant and equipment and report faults or hazards.
Carry out porterage and assist with furniture, equipment, and deliveries.
Support cleaning, waste management, housekeeping, and grounds maintenance requirements.
Respond to emergency situations and adverse weather conditions when required.
Ensure safeguarding procedures and school policies are followed at all times.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

Previous experience in a practical facilities, premises, maintenance, or caretaking role.
A working knowledge of buildings and first-line repairs.
Good knowledge of relevant health and safety processes.
Strong organisational and prioritisation skills.
Confidence using small tools and undertaking physical tasks.
A proactive and solution-focused approach.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Relevant facilities, caretaking, trade, or first aid qualifications – desirable.
A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.

This Caretaker role would suit a hardworking and dependable individual who enjoys a varied practical role and takes pride in maintaining high standards. A successful Caretaker will play an important part in keeping the school safe, functional, and welcoming throughout the year.
