PE Teacher – Barnet
We are seeking a resilient, enthusiastic, and highly skilled PE Teacher to join a specialist Pupil Referral Unit in Barnet from 17th September 2026. This is an excellent opportunity for a committed practitioner who is passionate about using physical education to engage young people, build confidence, and support positive outcomes for pupils who require an alternative approach to education.
The provision is a well-established specialist setting that supports students who have experienced barriers to learning within mainstream education. With small class sizes, a strong pastoral ethos, and a highly supportive staff team, the school places great emphasis on building positive relationships, promoting emotional wellbeing, and helping pupils re-engage with learning. Staff work collaboratively to provide personalised support that enables students to develop resilience, self-belief, and the skills needed for future success.
As a PE Teacher, you will deliver engaging and differentiated Physical Education lessons while helping pupils develop teamwork, confidence, resilience, and healthy lifestyles. The successful candidate will be able to motivate students who may present with challenging behaviour and create a safe, structured, and positive learning environment.
This is a full-time role commencing on 17th September 2026 and continuing until December 2026.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging, creative, and differentiated PE lessons.
- Use physical activity and sport to support pupils' engagement, confidence, and personal development.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and structured learning environment where pupils can succeed.
- Adapt teaching strategies to meet the individual needs of students within the PRU setting.
- Assess, monitor, and track pupil progress, using assessment effectively to inform planning.
- Promote positive behaviour through consistent routines, clear expectations, and restorative approaches.
- Build positive relationships with pupils, helping them develop resilience, self-regulation, and teamwork skills.
- Work collaboratively with pastoral staff, support staff, families, and external agencies to provide holistic support.
- Contribute positively to the wider life of the provision.
- Ensure safeguarding procedures and school policies are followed at all times.
Essential Criteria
- UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – essential.
- Qualified PE Teacher – essential.
- Experience teaching Physical Education within a secondary school or specialist setting.
- Exceptional behaviour management skills – essential.
- The ability to build positive, professional relationships with young people who may present with challenging behaviour.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- A resilient, patient, and adaptable approach to teaching.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
Preferred Criteria
- Previous experience working within a PRU, Alternative Provision, or specialist educational setting.
- Experience supporting students with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice, restorative approaches, or inclusive behaviour strategies.
- Experience using sport and physical activity to support engagement and wellbeing.
- A passion for supporting vulnerable learners to achieve positive outcomes.
