Lead Tutor (Alternative Provision) - South Tyneside
We are seeking an experienced, passionate, and ambitious Lead Tutor to join a brand new Alternative Provision in South Tyneside from September 2026. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping a new educational provision from the very beginning, supporting young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) to achieve recognised qualifications while preparing them for further education, employment, and independent living.
The provision has been established to deliver high-quality, personalised education to young people who require an alternative to mainstream schooling. With small teaching groups, an inclusive ethos, and a strong focus on developing confidence, employability, and life skills, the provision aims to create a supportive environment where every learner can succeed. Staff will work collaboratively to deliver a broad curriculum that combines academic achievement with vocational learning and personal development.
As Lead Tutor, you will deliver engaging and differentiated teaching across Functional Skills Maths, Functional Skills English, and Business & Enterprise. You will tutor groups of up to 10 SEN learners aged 16–18 in each teaching block, adapting lessons to meet individual learning needs while promoting confidence, independence, and positive outcomes.
This is a full-time role, Monday to Friday, commencing in September 2026, with a high potential to become a permanent position following an initial temporary period.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons in Functional Skills Maths, Functional Skills English, and Business & Enterprise.
- Teach and support groups of up to 10 SEN learners aged 13–18.
- Develop individual learning programmes that meet the needs of learners with additional needs.
- Prepare learners for Functional Skills qualifications and vocational outcomes.
- Assess learner progress, provide constructive feedback, and maintain accurate assessment records.
- Support learners' personal development, confidence, employability, and independence.
- Create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment that promotes engagement and achievement.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents, carers, and external agencies to provide holistic support.
- Ensure awarding body requirements and quality assurance processes are met.
- Maintain accurate learner records and contribute to continuous improvement within the provision.
- Ensure safeguarding procedures and organisational policies are followed at all times.
Essential Criteria
- A recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, Level 3/4/5 Education & Training) – essential.
- A relevant Assessor qualification (such as TQUK, A1, D32/D33 or equivalent) – essential.
- Experience teaching Functional Skills Maths and English.
- Experience delivering Business & Enterprise or vocational learning.
- Experience supporting young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
- Excellent classroom and behaviour management skills.
- Strong communication, organisation, and leadership skills.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
Preferred Criteria
- An Internal Quality Assurer (IQA) qualification, or currently working towards one.
- Previous experience within an Alternative Provision, PRU, specialist education, or further education setting.
- Experience delivering accredited vocational qualifications.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and inclusive teaching strategies.
- Experience supporting learners with SEMH needs or additional barriers to learning.
This role would suit an experienced Lead Tutor, Teacher, or Vocational Education Practitioner who is passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning.
