SEMH Teaching Assistant – South Tyneside
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a supportive school environment and provide tailored support to students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic practitioner who is passionate about helping students overcome barriers to learning and thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and wider school staff to support students’ individual needs, helping to create a structured, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support students with SEMH needs in the classroom as a SEMH Teaching Assistant, helping them engage positively with learning activities.
- Provide targeted support to individuals or small groups, encouraging participation and progress across the curriculum.
- Assist the class teacher in implementing behaviour support strategies and personalised learning plans.
- Help students develop social, emotional, and behavioural skills, promoting confidence and resilience.
- Monitor student progress and provide feedback to the teacher and SENCO as a SEMH Teaching Assistant.
- Foster positive relationships with students to support engagement and emotional wellbeing.
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff and other professionals to support students with SEMH needs.
- Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment in line with safeguarding and school policies.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- A relevant Teaching Assistant qualification.
- Experience working with children or young people, ideally supporting SEMH needs.
- A calm, patient, and empathetic approach when supporting students with behavioural or emotional challenges.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to build positive relationships with students and staff.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to adapt to the needs of different learners.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
